Preface
On the 23d-25th September 2014 Murmansk State Humanities University
hosts ЭСО ТЧЭОЫЧКЭТШЧКХ МШЧПОЫОЧМО “LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL INTERACTION
IN ARCTIC REGION”. TСО МШЧПОЫОЧМО ТЬ НОЯШЭОН ЭШ ЭСО 75th anniversary of the MSHU КЧН МШЧЭТЧЮОЬ ЭСО ЭЫКНТЭТШЧ ШП ЭСО ЬОЫТОЬ ШП МШЧПОЫОЧМОЬ “CЮХЭЮЫКХ НТЯОЫЬi-
Kurganova.
The chief goal of the conference is to analyze the urgent problems involved in the functioning of languages and cultures in the Arctic region, to define the general tendencies of the communication development, to work out in-
novative approaches to the problems of cross-cultural interaction.
It is ЭСО ШЫРКЧТгОЫЬ’ ЩХКЧ ЭШ НТЬМЮЬЬ ТЧ ЭСО МШЮЫЬО ШП ЭСО МШЧПОЫОЧМО ЩЫКМЭi- cal problems and difficulties connected with promoting cross-cultural interaction in the Arctic border region, to identify the role of communication and discourse in the formation of the world view, to determine the most adequate techniques and methods for studying the images of the world that speakers of different languages possess. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of linguistic education and the contribution it makes to the process of strengthening and consolidating cooperation in the North of Europe, as well as on the techniques of teaching Russian and other languages which function as intermediaries in the processes of furthering cross-cultural interaction. Another priority is a wide range of problems pertaining to the functioning of the Arctic socio-cultural space.
More than 60 scholars, research workers and authors of innovative projects from different cities of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and the EU have contributed their papers and prepared master classes in a variety of topics. The key areas under discussion are to be linguistics, cross-cultural communication and methodology of foreign language teaching, the problems of translation and its
assessment from the point of view of cross-cultural communication, journalism,
СТЬЭШЫТМКХ КЬЩОМЭЬ ШП RЮЬЬТК’Ь ТЧЭОЫКМЭТШЧ аТЭС ЧОТРСЛШЮЫТЧР МШЮЧЭЫТОЬ.
The volume opens with the papers delivered at the plenary session by Russian and international participants. They pertain to different aspects of crosscultural interaction: philosophical (Prof. A.M. Sergeev), psycholinguistic (Prof. A.A. Zalevskaya), social (Prof. V.V. Tevlina), educational (Prof. Y.A. Komarova, Assistant Prof. I.V.Ryzhkova) and linguistic (J.P. Nilsen).
The materials of the specialized sessions fall into four principal thematic groups: «Cross-cultural communication: language and culture interaction», «Cognitive-communicative aspects of discourse studies», «Innovation technologies of teaching foreign languages at school and university», «Linguodidactics: the secondary language personality in the modern communacation environment».
15
The papers delivered at the conference represent the following disciplines: discourse studies (A.M. Sergeev, G.M. Vishnevskaya, A.S.Kraynova, E.E. Kotsova, K.R.. Hanssen) , language as a reflection of cognitive processes in the human mind (A.A. Zalevskaya, N.I. Kurganova, S.A. Vinogradova, A.V. Kopylov, A.V. Samoylova, E.A. Tyurkan and others), cross-cultural communication as a reflection of global integration processes in society (J.P. Nilsen, V.V. Tevlina, P. Haugseth, U.Wrakberg and others), the role of different languages and cultures in modern society (I. Guissard , V.B. Bakula, V. M. CТЮМă, M. Richevaux, B. Roussel), peculiarities of education in global society (Y. A. Komarova, L.V. Comuzzi, M.A Akishina and O.N. Maslova, E.M. Davydova, T.D. Plyusnina and I.S. Uspenskaya, J. Hanssen and others), modern methods of foreign language teaching in secondary and higher education (E.N. Kvasyuk, S.A Kobtseva, O.V. Putistina, M.M. Kremleva, L.M. Grechok and others).
The statuses and posts held by the participants differ widely – from secondary school teacher to leading academics from Russia and abroad. But this diversity has contributed to the increased interest in the discussions after presentations and the master classes. Integration processes in society are unavoidable. The epoch of globalization not only creates grounds for the unification of social, economic and political aspects of society, but also enables every nation and culture to preserve its individuality and unique character.
The conference organizers regard the work of the plenary and the specialized sessions as a venue for discussion and exchange of opinions concerning joint projects and possibilities for setting up research groups in the Arctic region.
It is the hope of the conference organizers that our meetings will continue in future and will contribute to the consolidation of scientific, interdisciplinary connections and of the good-neighbourly relations between countries and educational institutions.
Conferences of this type are important not only for Russia but also for the
global community, since despite the negative tendencies of recent years in the НОЯОХШЩЦОЧЭ ШП RЮЬЬТК’Ь ЩШХТЭТМal and economic cooperation with Western coun-
tries, progressive intellectuals both in Russia and the West realize the shortsightedness of the policy of isolation and the impossibility of reversing the progress achieved in all the areas including cross-cultural cooperation.

“LIVE АORD” IN CROSS-CULTURAL STUDIES
34
Comparison of dictionary definitions in two languages is not sufficient for cross-cultural studies. Experimental data reveal the necessity of inner context investigation as live words are identified by language users with the help of personal multimodal hypertexts – enormous nets uniting various products of verbal and non-verbal experience processing.
Key words: live word, inner context, multimodal hypertext.
