UNІT 1
1. Discuss in pairs what people do when introduced to each other. After a short discussion tell the class what you think.
2. Read the text below and decide whether your guesses were right or not.
Code of conduct. Welcome to our company. Meetings and greetings.
In Britain and the USA, as elsewhere, there is a ritual way to meet and greet people. We follow certain rules or formulas. It is usual for a third person to per-form introductions in English. They will say:
This is Mr. Johnson…This is Miss Jones (at the same time indicating each person with their hand) or
May I introduce you to Mr. Robison. This is Mr. Baker or
I’d like you to meet Miss Maine…This is Mr. Richards.
The people introduced will say:
How do you do? - How do you do?
They can also add a phrase like this: - I’m glad to meet you. I’m pleased to meet you. It’s nice to meet you.
Remember that How do you do is only used after introductions and cannot be used for later meetings.
If there is no third person to introduce you, say: May I introduced myself? My name is Peter Dennison.
The answer will be: How do you do. My name is Mary Bell.
Note: Men do not call themselves Mr. They use either their Christian name and surname as above, or just their surname. Women normally use both Christian name and surname; they may add Mrs. or Miss to avoid confusion. Mrs. and surname is used to a married woman, Miss and surname is used to a girl or unmarried woman, Ms and surname is used to both married and unmarried women.
When you are introduced listen carefully to each name and use it later in your conversation. If you forget a person’s name or did not hear the name do not hesitate to say: I am sorry I did not hear your name. I am sorry I have forgotten your name.
When you have got to know somebody better you may say: - Hello – Hello.
- How are you? /How are you getting on? - Fine, thanks. After that people engage in small talk. Small talk may last from a few minutes to over an hour, depending upon circumstances. Skipping the formality of small talk would be in bad taste in business as elsewhere, minimizing its importance would be a mistake. Typical small talk with foreign visitor: Greetings-Weather-Where you are from-Nationality/residence-Language/customs-Work.
Here is an example of such a light conversation. Mr. Sanders , a visitor from an American company comes to an office in Japan. Ms. Tanimura is to meet and greet him before introducing the visitor to the senior managers.
Ms.Tanimura: Welcome to our company. I am Ms.Tanimura . Very nice to meet you, Mr.Sanders.
Mr.Sanders: Nice to meet you, too.
Ms.Tanimura: How was your trip?
Mr.Sanders: Very nice, thank you.
Ms.Tanimura: How do you like this weather?
Mr.Sanders: Well, it’s pretty warm, isn’t it?
Ms.Tanimura: Yes, in Tokyo it gets hot and humid in summer.
Mr.Sanders: Well, New York is no better; it’s like being in a tropical rain forest, only without the trees.
Ms.Tanimura: May I ask you how long you will be staying?
Mr.Sanders: I’ll be here for a couple of weeks.
Ms.Tanimura: I hope you will have a very nice stay. Now, if you follow me, I would like to introduce you to some of our executives who are anxious to meet you.
3. Role Play. A visitor from an English-speaking country comes to your company.
Meet him/her and introduce to your boss.
